How to Learn Cyber Security
If you are starting out in Cyber Security. The best way for you to learn is by being curious about how technology works and how you learn so that you can fully utilize all of your time. The first step you should take is understand how you learn best and then dig into the infinite pool of knowledge.
There are two approaches you can take for learning:
Bottom up, where you learn fundamentals and build on top of what you know.
Top down, where you learn how something works by working with the full product and then dissecting little parts of it.
I suggest you use both of these approaches when learning. When an attacker sees a potential victim, they are not just learning about the victim’s computer but also their life, their interests, and anything in between. You should also think that way to fully utilize your time and brain power. Use every resource you can to hack your own brain.
Another approach you should consider is implementing your own learning styles. I found that learning for me has a specific variety. See the list below to see how I learn best.
Learning Types
Visual
Watching videos , typically how-tos, how to do physical movements like how to put together a table, a raspberry pi, and a computer.
Reading
Best for learning theories, fundamentals, and concepts.
Writing
Best for learning facts, ports, flash cards, small bits of data.
Listening
Best for learning on the go, podcasts, languages, story telling, and inspiration.
Hands-on
Best for learning labs, tools, ctfs, research, coding, and best practices.
The last approach is finding out when you are most active and what makes you more motivated to learn.
Everyone has a different time that they feel most motivated. I find myself being most motivated in the early morning. I also learn rational and logic best in the morning and reading and writing in the evening.
Think offensively,
Quack Quack.
