Four Study Habits for Learning Technology and Science
I have researched enough ways to study, but the ones that seem to work the best revolve around who you are as a person.
You have to first create a routine with your life. Life is busy, we all want to do so much but have so little time. Once you have created a routine, you can start seeing where you have free time. Instead of being on your phone for 30 mins, you could have read a book. You get the idea.
When you practice your routine over and over, you know when to study. For example, I am able to wake up earlier before work to do Linear Algebra. After you have created a routine, the discipline of sticking to a routine will help you throughout your study lifestyle. With this said, discipline is something that will make or break your learning intensity. If you are serious about learning, you will make sacrifices to get those studying minutes in.
Now that we have a foundation, there are the three other habits I use.
- When I am learning any kind of heavy subject, I have to be realistic and think of it as taking a course in college. The courses usually last 10 weeks or 4 months. Spread apart the work needed to be done for what you are learning. For example, I am currently learning Linear Algebra. I picked a few sources to learn from and have been going topic by topic, one a day. Then when I hit a unit stop, I practice what I have learned through visualization or just math problems.
- Another one of my habits is taking breaks. Yes, taking a break is a habit. There comes a point when you stop learning and your mind goes a bit foggy. That is when you need to get up and do something else. When that happens to me I usually stretch, look at a video about what I just learned, or just go for a walk.
- My last study habit that I leave here is reinforcement learning. Learn a topic, then watch a video about it a few days later, then practice it again a few days later, and lastly teach it to someone. When you space out your learning like this you force your brain to recall what it last remembered, by doing so you can catch the learning gaps of your previous session. I like to do the last part by making videos. When I make videos, I have to be confident in my knowledge and comfortable enough to teach anyone watching without a script.
Let me know if you have any other study habits. These are the ones that have worked for me. I can always improve!
